GRANTS MADE

Review The Caledonia Foundation’s previous grants:

2012 | Projects suppported 01 July 2011 to 30 June 2012

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY | Arts Education in NSW | Outreach

Sydney Theatre Company Education has committed to a program which will double participation in STC Education programs from a current 30,000 to 60,000 by 2012 and beyond; aiming to rebuild capacity for delivering youth arts and drama education in New South Wales.

STC’s commitment will close the gap in state education, providing meaningful arts experiences to a range of young people across New South Wales. The extended reach will ensure that children from disadvantaged communities, and/or remote and regional communities have equal access to high quality, live performing arts.

Support from The Caledonia Foundation will enable the STC to draw on its its unique education capability to craft rich theatre experiences for school students with plays that challenge and illuminate aspects of daily life.

FAIR BUSINESS | Fair Repairs Transition Program for long term unemployed | capacity funding

Fair Repairs is a social enterprise that aims to address unemployment in social housing areas by creating opportunities for local people to do local work for real pay. The core component of the Fair Repairs model is the recruitment of long term unemployed and the provision of both personal and professional support to enable them to return to work.

Given that one of the major indicators for a child's health and wellbeing listed by the AIHW 2011 is improved family and community environments in socio-economically disadvantaged areas this program will have a direct impact on the young people in the community.

COUNTRY EDUCATION FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA | CEFA

The Caledonia Foundation is seed funding the establishment of three new country education foundations in Australia over the next three years, as part of the national activities of the Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEFA).

Established in 1994, CEFA exists to improve the education and career prospects of young people in regional and rural Australia by providing financial assistance, encouragement and support to individual students, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, through facilitating the formation and operation of local, community-based education foundations.

With funding from The Caledonia Foundation, CEFA will support the establishment of new education foundations in Hastings and Colleambally in NSW. These foundations will in turn provide grants to local youth who are leaving school and need assistance to make the transition into further education or their chosen vocation.

The Officer will commenced in April 2011 and is developing a Schools Visits and Speaking Program in NSW, ACT and SE Qld whilst promoting the OASIS Homeless Short Film Competition to all secondary schools accompanied by the OASIS Schools Curriculum Resource.

Since the release of The Oasis Documentary in 2008, Oasis Sydney has also focused its attention in developing strategies to campaign to government and the community about reducing youth homelessness. Discussions are underway in Qld and Victoria in 2012 to replicate the OASIS outreach and education model.

The Oasis Youth Support Network provides a range of services and programs that seek to intervene in the lives of these young people, offering them hope, stability, direction and practical help in accommodation, health and legal matters.
